The Future of Urban Planning in Los Angeles — essay by Brian Rosenstein

Los Angeles stands at a pivotal moment in its urban development. As a member of the LA City Planning Commission, I see firsthand how decisions made today will shape our city for generations.

Balancing Growth and Preservation

One of the greatest challenges facing Los Angeles is balancing the need for new housing and development with the preservation of our city’s unique architectural heritage and neighborhood character. Thoughtful density, transit-oriented development, and community engagement are all essential components of sustainable growth.

Lessons from Beverly Hills

During my time as Chair of the Beverly Hills Planning Commission, I learned that the best planning outcomes emerge from genuine dialogue between stakeholders. The historic preservation ordinance we helped craft — with guidance from the L.A. Conservancy — demonstrated that development and preservation need not be adversaries.

Looking Ahead

The future of LA planning must address housing affordability, climate resilience, and equitable access to opportunity. These are complex challenges, but I remain optimistic that collaborative, community-centered approaches will help us build a better city for all Angelenos.
